Our amazing bodies have a natural physical mental emotional response to deal with danger. The whole nervous system goes into overdrive, blood pumping, heart beating fast, ready to fight, to run or freeze. We become hyper vigilant, tense and anxious looking for, seeing, imagining and re-experiencing danger. This can affect all aspects of daily life, work, relationships and health.
Yoga based therapy can give you the supported experience of regulating this affect AND with guidance and effort you can apply these techniques in your daily life to regulate your nervous system through breath awareness and mindfulness.
Postural adjustments, simply learning to stand straighter and move your body with confidence in the support of ground below is profoundly beneficial.
Trauma aware yoga is where you are invited and supported to develop a caring relationship with your own body in your own pace and in your own way.
One of the symptoms of trauma is a feeling of disconnect from the body. The classes start with simply feeling our feet, actually connecting with sensations as we stand and start to ground ourselves.
Through gentle mindful yoga postures, we learn to stretch, move ourselves into slight discomfit (feeling of tightness not pain) accept it, breathing out (often a simple sighing release of breath) and feel the subtle shift of tension and opening in our muscles with the knowledge that we can move out of the pose at any time. You are in control of the process.
Gradually we learn to inhabit more of our bodies, access more energy and connect with physical postural support for ourselves. We learn to regulate our own nervous system, recognize the beginnings of triggers, stresses and support ourselves through grounding and breathe to support ourselves before we become overwhelmed.
